Found this Anvil that appears to be made of brass in my grandfather's closet. There is no personal history to this item. It is in very good condition with very few scratches.

Hi Kathy,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
I'm not finding much out about PJ Curtin online as there are several possible candidates it could be (if you have additional information you can share about them, that might help me narrow or refine my valuation).
This is likely to be a salesman sample for a steel- or iron-worker or farrier; it demonstrates the work they are capable of and is small enough that was highly portable and could be carried around with them easily.
The workmanship on this is quite good and - though possibly a unique thing with no exact comparables - salesman samples are an important collecting category. Without additional information on PJ Curtin, I would not be surprised to see this sell at auction within the $200-400 range.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A vintage cast, chased and engraved brass or bronze anvil-form salesman's sample
British, early 20th Century
In the form of an anvil, with cast and chased decorations to the sides and back; the underside engraved "P.J. Curtin Eng 10.29.07"
Height: 1 -1/2 inches; length: 3 inches; depth: 3/4 inches
CONDITION: This appears to be in good condition
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$ 200-400*
