Hi Dina,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
At first glance, it resembles forms seen in ancient Mediterranean pottery — particularly small oinochoai (wine jugs) from Greek or Near Eastern contexts — but there are several things to examine carefully before calling it an antiquity, notably how the jug was made.
On genuine ancient jugs, handle joins are usually clearly hand-applied and often show thumb impressions or tool marks. This one looks somewhat smoothed and modern in finish. Ancient ceramics typically show visible temper (small inclusions like grit or mica). It’s hard to see that clearly here. The proportions resemble ancient forms, but similar shapes have been reproduced for the tourist market for decades.
This is most likely a 20th Century decorative reproduction, made for the export or tourist market and worth between $20 and $50. If it's examined in person by an expert in Greek, Roman or Near Eastern antiquities and determined to be a couple of millennia old, it would have a value of several hundred.
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, or questions/concerns, and thank you again for using Mearto.
