43/4 X 37/8in. frame may be ivory
Gift from Aunt who brought it from Europe
Good evening, David,
Thank you for submitting photographs to Mearto for appraisal.
This is a French school miniature portrait of Venus, Late 18th century, watercolor on ivory, within an ivory frame. The artist's name might be on the back of the ivory disk it is painted on, or it may be along the edge and hard to see because of the frame. It is possible to take it out of the frame by carefully bending up the triangular 'teeth' holding the disk within the frame. The back is cardboard and looks modern but if you carefully remove it, you should be able to access the back of the painting.
As an unattributed miniature painting, this has a value of $150-250. If you take it out of the frame and find a signature, it could be worth more. If you find a name do let me know so I can re-evaluate my appraisal.
I hope this information is useful to you. Please let us know if you have other items to be appraised, and thank you for using Mearto.
