8”x7.5” possibly ceramic sitting smiling Buddha. Bare chested and colorful robe sitting on wooden pedestal. Pedestal has a mark (and X with a inverted v over the top) and a stamp of some sort.
My grand mother purchased it in early 1930’s in the Philippines though marking under the Buddha says China.
Hello Bill,
Thank you for your appraisal inquiry with Mearto. The item presented appears to be a porcelain figurine depicting Hotei, otherwise known as Budai or laughing Buddha. Hotei is a somewhat historical figure, who was believed to be a Chinese monk. The figure is marked "CHINA" to the underside, indicating the object dates to the mid-20th-century. The mark to the underside of the wood base appears to be peculiar, as that mark typically appears on European porcelain objects. It may have been added after the object's original production.
The estimate provided is based on recent auction estimates and results of other comparable porcelain figurines of Hotei dating to the 20th century. The estimate is contingent on a full condition report. Please note asking or dealer prices may vary. Thank you and please take care.
