Dear Kenneth,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be a gouache drawing on cardboard with the measurements of 10 x 8 inches. The drawing depicts a spaceship taking off or landing on the moon and is signed with the name "Stanilla". Sadly no further information regarding the biography of this artist is mentioned in reference books or similar databases. This artwork was made in the 1950s or 1960s.
Works by this artist were recently not offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 150 to 300 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
Mr. Stanilla was commissioned to do illustrative artwork for science fiction magazines and books. This painting may have been published on a magazine cover, or it was artwork that was never used. He did produce illustrations for Martin Marietta back in the 1950's, and his work is in the book "Spacepower: What it means to you" published in 1958.
Dear Kenneth,
thank you for this additional information. Sadly his artworks and illustrations are mentioned in the biggest auction databases. With this background, I changed the estimate a bit.
With kind regards,
Georg
Hello Georg. I deleted the photo showing the back of the canvas board and added 2 new close-ups. You will notice in the close-up of the left fin and engine nozzle that the board has several holes. That is where the artist used a compass to draw the curved lines for the fins and rocket body. You will also see engraved marks from the pencil.
