Oil on canvas Paint looks very old, almost flaking off but only at the edges The frame, which is not original, is in repair. 14x16 in it might be from School of Rembrandt, a study after an etching or other painting from the Italian masters before Rembrandt. It had been relined. Some damage close to the lower edge is visible. The old canvas is visible around the edges. It has a very dark color. I have owned it for thirty years but never had it appraised.
Given as a gift in 1990 by my Stepfather who was a Unitarian minister in Manhattan. It hung in his studio on Park Ave for 50 years prior. According to him he bought it in Paris from a private owner and had it valuated. He was told it is from the School Of Rembrandt and that it might be a study after other masters. I have owned it for 30 years, never had it displayed.
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a depiction of Sant'Antonio Abate or St. Anthony Abbot, depicted reading, holding the crutch and the bell ,his burning love for Christ shown by the flame springing from the bible. The painting in your possession is of lovely quality, but I would rather suggest an italian baroque painter, ca. 1650. The painting would deserve an in depts research and attribution which might or might not be successful. The estimate is based on similar religious paintings sold at auction. A successful attribution would increase the value considerably.
