I purchased 2 paintings from an estate auction. They were told to me as "prints" however, when I got them home I noticed they were very old oil on canvas. The print is of Bartolome Esteban Murillo's St. Leander & St. Bonaventure and the second it measures 15x20. It has staples around the border but I can tell that the photos have been restretched and nails were removed. Canvas is not signed.
Very affluent family in Murfreesboro Tennessee.
Dear Matthew,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please upload a few better images of the surface to be sure that these objects are painted and not printed. In my opinion, they look obviously painted but there are high-quality oil prints on the market.
With kind regards,
Georg
I just took this out of the frame and saw that it has been relined. There is also a signature on it which I've uploaded.
Dear Mathew,
Thank you for your support. Sadly there are reflexes on the signature and the image is a bit blurred. Is there a chance to get a better image?
With kind regards,
Georg
Ok done it looks like J. W Escribano.
Can you give me a status update? I thought I'd have a response within 48 hrs?
Dear Mathew,
Thank you for the additional images and your patience. Sadly the research of paintings sometimes needs to be researched, which takes time. I excuse for the delay and will send you the additional information regarding the artist later. The presented object is a painting made in oil paint on canvas with the measurements of 15 x 20 inches. It depicts St. Leander and St. Bonaventure after a print drafted by Bartolome Esteban Murillo. This is a painting after this print made in the late 18th or more probable in the 19th century. This painting is signed with the name J. W? Escribano. Actually, I compare your painting with works of Francisco de Paula ESCRIBANO LIÑAN (1820-1900). The J. of the signature could be also an F. which would fit with my suspect who also painted religious paintings like yours. I give you an update about this tomorrow and ask you for patience.
With best regards,
Georg
I paid for this 2 weeks ago and still have not received an appraisal.....
Dear Matthews,
Regarding a technical issue, my message was not displayed. I very much ask for apologies for this delay. This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible. Sadly the market for religious paintings is a bit difficult at this moment.
An estimation would be between 1000 to 2500 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With best regards,
Georg
I just added 4 more images. Let me know if you need anything else.
