Hi Gail,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
While there's an artist named "Socorro Gonzales" from the Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico, her work is quite different than this one so its likely this was made in Socorro, N.M., a city in central New Mexico, U.S. that is located along the Rio Grande. It was named "Socorro" (meaning help or aid) by a Spanish expedition after the local Piro Indians provided food; the community is known for its black-on-white Puebloan pottery, though it's unusual to find figural sculptures from there.
At auction today, these figures tend to sell for between $125 and $175.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
Native American School, 20th Century
Standing figure of a Native woman,
hand-painted hand-cast pottery, Signed "Socorro" underneath.
17 inches tall
CONDITION: This appears to be in very good condition.
PROVENANCE: Acquired at Nice Things, Helen, GA.
$ 125-175*
