The letters A.S. are on them which pointed me towards this clip that I found online: "STILDENBAUER, Asa— Winesburg, Holmes Co., Ohio. Half-stock percussion rifle marked "A. S." on barrel." I'm lead to believe that this is accurate because the gun has been in the family and in Winesburg Ohio for a very long time.
Like I said in the other one. It has been in the family for a while.
Dear Matt,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The presented object appears to be an Adam Stilgenbauer pistol with a percussion lock. The pistol is engraved With A. S. which is the signature of the weaponsmith Adam Stilgenbauer who was active in the area of Ohio. Stilgenbauer came 1840 from Germany to the States and founded a workshop for high-quality rifles and pistols. This pistol was used for target practice what we can see at the shape of the notch and bead sighter.
Artworks of this artist were recently offered and sold on the international and national auction market.
This piece is in good condition and there are no serious damages visible.
An estimation would be between 300 to 600 USD.
This estimation is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
