Large cotton white sweatshirt with logo for the theme park— stylized eagle atop an unfurled flag. Disney’s America written on the eagle. It is gently used. The label is faded so I don’t know where it was made. There is a small tag that says Discus Athletic. My husband worked on the theme park project and was given the sweatshirt.
The body is 25” long and 24” wide. The sleeves are 19” long.
Hi Janet,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Disney’s America was announced in 1993 as a proposed American history–themed park in Haymarket, Virginia, near the Manassas Civil War battlefield. The idea was to create a park that would celebrate American history, with areas themed to different eras: Colonial America, the Civil War, Industrial Revolution, the immigrant experience, and more.
Many historians, preservationists, and local residents opposed the idea of putting a theme park so close to sacred Civil War battlefield land from prominent historians like David McCullough and groups like the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
There were also concerns about traffic, commercialization, and sprawl in the largely rural area. A public relations nightmare for Disney, they withdrew the project in September 1994, less a year after announcing it.
Needless to say, this is a special piece of memorabilia that could bring several hundred - if not a few thousand - dollars if sold in the right Disney-themed auction (Heritage and Van Eaton Galleries both conduct Disneyana sales) where I know people would go nuts for this rarity.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
