8 piece set
It was my grandmother’s
Hello Renee,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, mark and the colours, I concluded that this is a Tea and Dinner Service Set of The Edwin M. Knowles China Co. Made in United States, likely dating back to 1930-1935 period. The brand was one of the known American Porcelain desginers and producers early 20th century onwards. The brand did not produced hand-painted or enhanced by hand pieces as far as we know. They only did produced printed porcelain pieces starting from 1900. In their 60 years journey till 1963 the brand was considered of high quality in the market.
Your dinnerware appears to be consist of 52 pieces as far as I can count. The decoration on each piece is the same floral pattern, this pattern is designed like a bouquet of different types of flowers. It probably has some missing pieces lost due to almost 80 years of age. Normally these sets are expected to reach 70-80 pieces in total. A clear chip can be seen on one of the salad bowls. This mark underneath your piece was used extensively in 1930's. The "Union Made" writing was added to the mark as a declaration from the company, stating that they value the rights of their workers. This is a rare event in porcelain marks, the company closed their doors in 193 as many American porcelain producers at the time due to demand on cheaper export pieces. 38-9 under the mark is the symbol of the floral patern on each piece.
Entirely hand knotted.
