Bentwood cafe chair: Height at back 34", seat height 18", seat diameter 16.5., embossed wooden seats, pieces are screwed together. Label includes address at Broadway and 17th Street, New York
An elderly couple in Washington, DC had them in their family for years. They gave a set of eight chairs to my parents. I have had them for about 45 years.
Good afternoon, Shelley,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So that I may best assist you, can you please confirm if you need an appraisal for just one chair, or a set of eight?
Thanks!
Delia
Good morning, Shelley,
Thanks for confirming the number of chairs you want appraised. Thonet chairs were copied so widely that their name is synonymous with bentwood seating furniture; however labeled examples as yours are are fairly rare and a bit more valuable than ones that do not have the name and/or are reproductions. Based on the photographs and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A set of eight bentwood side or 'cafe' chairs
Made an labeled by Thonet Brothers, Vienna, retailed in New York City
circa 1900
Each with bent bowed back and circular seats with incised decoration
34 inches overall height, 18 inches seat height, seat diameter 16 1/2 inches
PROVENANCE: inherited from parents; previously with a Washington, DC couple
CONDITION: appears to be in good condition with wear commensurate with age and use
$3,000-5,000*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you again for using Mearto.
Thank you so much, Delia. We have decided we would like to sell the entire set. What is our next step?
Shelley
Wonderful. We work with lots of auctioneers from relevant and highly qualified auction houses. Your item is in our database of leads and interested auctioneers will reach out to you directly on your email if they can help you sell your item.
If you said "yes" or "maybe" when we asked if your item was for sale auctioneers are now able to contact you. If you said "no" go to your item page and change that to "yes".
I will say that many auction houses these days have temporarily suspended taking things because of the COVID-19 situation but all are eager to get back to work once things open back up.
Best of luck!
I would like an appraisal for the set of eight. Thank you for your fast response.
