What does this mean?

Good morning, Lois,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. Are there any marks on the shade or base that might indicate the maker? There were a lot of different makers who made this kind of lamp and, because there can be a broad variation in value, it's helpful to know if it should be valued as an attributed piece, or as an unattributed piece.

Many thanks!
Delia

Hi Delia, thank you for getting back to me. I don't see any markings on the shade itself or the base of the lamp. Hope this helps!

Thanks! if you'd like this appraisal to include dimensions (overall height, diameter of shade), please forward that to me at your convenience and I'll update this appraisal.
Based on the photographs and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

An Art Deco style slag glass and bronze or brass table lamp
unattributed maker, probably American, probably mid 20th Century or later
the domed shade with lobed top blue turtle-back tiles and depicting sailboats along the bottom, on a bronze or brass standard, electrified.

PROVENANCE: Acquired from a gallery

Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you again for using Mearto.

Wow, really that's all? I had another appraiser tell me $325 for good working condition and $450 for excellent working condition. I'm very disappointed. I paid more than that for the lamp a couple years ago.

If you acquired it from a gallery/antiques dealer, you almost certainly paid a retail price, which is 3-4 times higher than fair-market values for auction.
Were those appraisals for insurance values? Those are almost always in line with retail pricing, as the price one would have to pay to replace the lamp if you bought it from a dealer.
