Unknown Artist; Religious Portrait, "I don't see a signature"...
Portrait of the Madonna. Approx 36 inches wide and approx 63 inches tall.
I received this in an inheritance in about 1990. It has been in my family since the 1700's/1800's. It is from Sicily, from what I was told as a child.

This is an early 19th century, 1800s, Victorian style, primitive painted large altar size original religious theme oil painting, likely done in Italy, depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary to Heaven. It appears to have been re-stretched and placed in a modern 20th century frame. The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.

Also I do remember 2 things. the portrait arrived in American
"rolled" up for protection on the ship... my Father had this frame put on in the 1980's...

The appraisal is interesting. It was appraised in the early 1990's for $3000.00 for my Father.
The market has slumped considerably since then and was further impacted by the Recession. The passage of time does not mean an exponentail and equal rise in value of objects.
What recession ? The stock market is at all time historical highs. America is worth $Trillions more than just 16 months ago. Unemployment is at a historical all time lows. The passage of time at every auction I've ever been to seems to increase the value of just about everything. I do understand that market value and actual cash value are two different things. Prior to the 2008 Recession and mid range fine art and collectibles market was at its height. Values dropped precipitously in those areas (with the exception of blue chip works) and have not recovered to equal those sale values since then. My career has involved studying and following this market intently for several decades, my statement is correct and the estimate remains the same.
Please add extreme close-ups of the surface so I can see the texture and a photo of the backside, do not remove from frame.
