What does this mean?

Hello Adam,

I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,

Considering the photographs, glass pattern, quality and the colours, I concluded that this is a Hand Made Peking Glass Vase, maden in China. Likely, the city of Beijing. Dating back to 1950-1970 period. Peking Glass was introduced to Chinese Court during the Qing Dynasty period in late 17th century. During the Kangxi Period, the emperor established an Imperial Glass Factory to enhance these techniques which were newly adapted by Chinese from European Glass Art. We believe the Italian style glass technique of Peking Glass was brought to China by the Jesuit Priests. The early pieces till the Republic Period were made often with the specific Yellow colour associated with the Qing Dynasty. Although there were early productions of this red on white pattern we usually see these animal decorations and colours in late or mid 20th century pieces.

Your pair has a natural scene depicting floral patterns and parrots. This is a common scene from 1960’s and examples of it can be found easily. The craftsmanship of the glass can be classified as average. In comparison to earlier pieces, 20th century pieces are considered of poor quality. Yet, this pair is appropriately carved and made for their production period. Originally the Peking Glass vases are made with a carving technique, in this technique two layers of glass would placed on each other and the decoration would be created by carving the outer layer. Therefore it was considered a very hard craftsmanship, later in 20th century a high percentage of pieces were carved and replaced on the first surface which requires less effort. Your pieces are in good condition with a red on white decoration.

Entirely hand made and carved.

Dimensions: 10 Inches High Each.

Condition: In good condition free of chips or cracks.

Provenance: Unknown

400-500$ for the pair.
