Hi Aaron,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The Virgin of Kazan is one of the most venerated icons in the Russian Orthodox Church and is considered a miraculous representation of the Theotokos (Mother of God). This icon has a significant place in both the spiritual and cultural history of Russia and the Orthodox tradition.
The Virgin of Kazan icon is believed to have been miraculously discovered in 1579 in the city of Kazan after a young girl, Matrona, was guided by a vision to unearth it from a hidden location.
The icon quickly became associated with numerous miracles, including protection against invasions and healing the sick. It played a central role in uniting and inspiring the Russian people during times of conflict. It has been credited with protecting Russia during significant historical moments, such as the defense against Polish invaders in 1612 and Napoleon’s invasion in 1812.
Comparably sized 19th Century Virgin of Kazan icons usually sell for between $1,000-1,500
