Hi Aaron,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn (Russian: Остробрамская Богородица, "Ostrobramskaya Bogoroditsa") is a highly venerated icon of the Theotokos (Mother of God) in Eastern Christianity, particularly in the Russian Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church. This icon is housed in the Gate of Dawn (Ostra Brama) chapel in Vilnius, Lithuania.
The icon is believed to have been created in the early 17th century and placed in a small chapel above the Gate of Dawn, part of Vilnius's city walls. Its placement was intended to protect the city and its inhabitants, as the Theotokos is often seen as a guardian of cities and nations.
The icon depicts the Mother of God without the Christ Child, shown in a prayerful and sorrowful posture with her hands crossed over her chest. It is adorned with a gold and silver overlay (riza) that highlights its solemn beauty. Its placement above the city gate signifies her role as a protector and defender, a theme prevalent in Orthodox spirituality.
While this appears to be 18th Century, these are less sought after by collectors so it has a value of $600-900.
