Painting, perhaps water color, bought with frame intact from estate sell of local art collector in st. Croix, Virgin Islands. It has many hidden objects concealed within it’s subject No appraisers, or even art dealers associated with the sale. Property was preparing for demolition. Home have been vacant for approx 15 years. It has suffered some water or humidity damage. It appears to be on some type of parchment paper. I purchased for little to nothing. The painting was amongst very valuable art, and yet this piece was hanging in great room for all to see. I figured it most likely had sentimental value, but the oddity of the peace keeps me fascinated. Even from the eyes of an inexperienced art collector, the technique appears to require some skill.
I do not know much about it other than it once belong to a local art collector in St. Croix Virgin Islands. The back of the painting is still sealed. Some damage and deterioration of the paper is noted. I did not want to open it up until I spoke with someone. The initials MM 93 are located in the bottom left corner.
Dear Robin,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. My sincere apologies for the delay with the appraisal.
The presented object appears to be a medium-sized artwork in mixed media with unknown measurements. The artwork depicts a sitting woman on a chair or throne. The iconography reminds me of the throning Madonna. The artwork is monogrammed with "MM" and dated 19"93".
Sadly no additional information for an artist with this name fitting in style and motif is given by reference books and databases.
Comparable objects were recently offered and sold on the international auction market.
This piece is in good condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 100 to 200 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
George

Hello, I was just wondering if u were going to still appraise my painting. I haven’t heard anything back from anyone.
The picture is signed dated bottom left corner with initials MM 93. I presume that’s a date. I wish I could give u more info, but everything I know about it came secondhand from the lady managing the charity proceeds. All proceeds benefitted the island dog and cat rescues. The lady did inform me she had worked in shop for over 20 years, so with the island being as small as it is I figured her historical accounts were likely to be close to accurate. I would be happy with any information u might have in regards to artists particular style and technique, as well as medium used. I do know that it appears to have some paint beginning to flake away. It appears chalky, perhaps watercolors? That’s just an uneducated guess on my part. Lol.
