Hi Elizabeth,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Rocking chairs were so ubiquitous in American society that they were made by nearly every chairmaker in the US in the mid 19th Century to accommodate the demand. Unfortunately, there hasn't been enough research done to help identify ones made that are unmarked or don't come with bills of sale, etc.
Because they were so popular, and owned so widely, that there are more examples on the market than demand, which keeps prices on the (very) low side. Most rocking chairs of this vintage that come to auction rarely sell for more than $150, if that.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique Victorian carved cherrywood rocking armchair
American, mid 19th Century
The rounded rectangular back flanked by rounded arms with carved supports, the frame raised on short scrolled legs on rockers. The back and seat upholstered in a later blue silk. Unmarked.
Overall height: 36 inches; width: 35-1/2 inches; seat depth: 23-1/2 inches
CONDITION: This chair appears to be in very good condition for its age.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$ 100-150*
