I have five Uranium Glass Dessert Cups. These cups were made with Uranium in them so it glows under black light. I have included pictures with and without the black light. They are light green tinted glass in regular light. They glow fluorescent under the black light.
3 1/2 inches tall. The cup is 3 1/2 inches wide on top. There are five cups.
I found these items in a house that was to be torn down. I never met the owner. The owner's child that was removing items from the house didn't know anything about these.
Hello Jennifer,
I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal,
Considering the photographs, overall pattern, glass type, quality and the colours, I concluded that this is a set of Uranium Glass Ice Cream Cups. The set dates back to the period from 1950 to 1970. Uranium was being used for colouring the glass since the first half of the 19th century but it became more and more popular in the early 20th century, especially 1930's. A specific tone of the Uranium Glass is also referred as Vaseline Glass but this tone is rather a yellow one. Your set on the other hand is considerably more green in a neon tone. To obtain this green colour an additional colorant, usually iron has been used in addition to the uranium. Some appraiser and collector groups name this coloured pieces as “Depression Glass,”and they consider it to be a less desirable commodity. However, every type of Uranium Glass has it's own collectors. Pieces were molded, and based on the decorational style they do belong to early 1960's. Current owner tested the set with UV light on a black background and therefore the authenticity is clear. The set is composed of five pieces in total. Uranium content of the pieces could be up to 2% considering the production period of the set. Very decorative and collectible. The set is in good condition without visible problems.
