What does this mean?

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. Based on the photographs and description provided, the subject of this appraisal is a subset of a stamp collection consisting of approximately 250 individual used mostly United States postage stamps (with the exception of a handful of unused specimens, and a handful of stamps from different exhibitions, for example, the 1956 FIPEX Philatelic Exhibition in New York - the stamps bearing "Monaco" and another set of two stamps each bearing the Statue of Liberty). The bulk of the collection comes from approximately 1950 to 2000.

According to the current owner, the collection was acquired via inheritance. Concerning this particular subset of the inherited collection, these pieces are generally well organized into era, and duplicates are grouped together. Unfortunately all of the US used (postmarked) stamps - from the 1/2 cent issues up to the special issues in the 1980s, 90s, and 00s have book values of approximately $0.25 each (even those with the higher denominations such as the 40 cent John Marshall from 1955).

The unused stamps generally have a value in the $1.00 range. Unfortunately no particularly rare pieces were seen as the collection was examined in photographs provided. There is an exhibition sheet of two stamps that does have a value of approximately $5 to $10.

In consideration of the factors noted, a Fair Market Value (pre-auction estimate) of this portion of the collection examined would be estimated at $75 to $100.
