The length of the blade is 31”. It is is 1/2” in width at the top. The handle is 6 3/4” in length and 3” wide at its greatest width. The handle is grooved and has an American eagle at both the top and bottom. Also engraved with laurels and flowers.
My father gave it to me. He acquired it from his father. My grandfather lived in the Kansas City area between 1915 and 1982. My father told me that my grandfather stabbed a stray aggressive bulldog with it. That’s all the information that I have.
Dear Ronald,
Thank you for the new images and your information.
The presented object appears to be a field or staff officer sword M1860. It has a brass handle decorated with the American eagle, a wooden handle, and a steel blade. This model was produced by many different manufacturers and the blade is marked CGS. It was made in the second half of the 19th century. The scabbard is missing.
This piece is in medium condition and there is no serious damage visible in the images provided.
A fair market estimation would be between 150 to 300 USD.
This estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparable items. Retail "asking prices" can be higher and may vary.
With kind regards,
Georg
It could also be G G S. It’s hard to read
I have more photos, but hard to upload on here. Is there another way to send them to you?
Hi Georg - hard to get a good photo. The only thing I found on the blade was towards the top. It says C C S
