My wife who is from Thailand passed away
Dear Steven,
Thank you for choosing Mearto. Could you please give the dimensions and weight of this statue?
Thank you very much
Hello! I’m very glad that you chose Mearto for your online appraisal. Considering the photos, this item is:
A sitting Thai Buddha statue (28 height, 19 wide, 12 depth inches, and weights 120 pounds). In the head there is the Ushnisha and the pose is Bhumisparsha Mudra. These Buddha statues can represent teaching, meditation, or an attempt to reach enlightenment. It is more commonly known as the 'earth witness' mudra. This mudra, formed with all five fingers of the right hand extended to touch the ground, symbolizes the Buddha's enlightenment under the bodhi tree, when he summoned the earth goddess, Sthavara, to bear witness to his attainment of enlightenment. The right hand, placed upon the right knee in earth-pressing mudra, and complemented by the left hand-which is held flat in the lap in the dhyana mudra of meditation, symbolizes the union of method and wisdom, samasara and nirvana, and also the realizations of the conventional and ultimate truths. It is in this posture that Shakyamuni overcame the obstructions of Mara while meditating on Truth.
As it is not signed, it is not possible to determine the age exactly but it looks from 20th century, and made out of bronze, presumably.
PROVENANCE: Inherited.
$ 2500 - 3000
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary. This type of heavy buddhas are not common, and a similar wood Buddha was sold for around $2800 (https://www.lauritz.com/en/auction/large-chinese-buddha-in-bronze-20th-century/i5653403/).
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you again for using Mearto.
