Hi Patty,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Stanley Platos Martin Ross was a 7th Avenue designer label that specialized in luxury or occasion wear, such as evening gowns, cocktail dresses, or formal attire. According to a vintage fashion blog, Stanley Platos worked for Givenchy and Valentino before starting his own design house in 1982. Clients included Mary Tylor Moore, Linda Evans, and Ethel Kennedy. The dresses were sold in high-end department stores and specialty boutiques. He died in 1991 at age 44 (his NY Times obituary is here [there may be a paywall] https://www.nytimes.com/1991/12/06/obituaries/stanley-platos-44-a-fashion-designer.html].
There’s no clear authoritative documentation that the Stanley Platos – Martin Ross label continued as a fully active fashion house after Platos’s death in 1991.
However, clothing labeled Stanley Platos – Martin Ross continued to circulate and appear in the vintage market through the 1990s, suggesting garments were still being sold or produced from existing inventory or lingering production runs from before his death
The silhouette of this dress is typical of late 1980 and early 1990s fashion, a period that is currently in vogue among nostalgia-driven collectors.
It’s not a mass-market brand like Calvin Klein or Donna Karan, so garments with this tag were produced in smaller quantities. I've found some other garments from this brand currently retailing for prices ranging from $200-400 though when offered at auction, prices would more likely be about half that: $100-200.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
