Bronze Japanese Statue, Kannon Bosatsu, circa 19th or 20th Century Condition: missing lotus, otherwise great condition
25"x5.5"
Hello, this item is a Japanese Kannon Bosatsu statue cast in bronze and produced in the mid 20th century. The elongated form, the ornate mandorla with pierced flame motifs, and the stylized drapery follow late Meiji and Showa period workshop designs rather than earlier Buddhist sculpture traditions. The surface shows artificial patination and remnants of gilding, which were common in decorative export bronzes made for Western buyers. The missing lotus base confirms it was originally part of a multi piece assembly, a standard feature of mid century devotional bronzes.
Collectors of Buddhist art look for age, casting quality, and completeness. Because this statue is a later reproduction rather than an Edo or early Meiji piece, the value remains within the decorative art market. Its height gives it presence, but the missing base reduces the price range. Based on similar 20th century Japanese bronze Kannon figures, the fair market value stands between 100 and 150 USD.
