Cylinder desks, also known as roll-top or tambour desks, were developed in France during the second half of the 18th century and became especially fashionable during the reign of Louis XVI. By the late 1700s, master cabinetmakers in Paris were producing elaborate examples veneered with exotic woods, gilt bronze mounts, and intricate marquetry. The design spread throughout Europe and later evolved into the more utilitarian American roll-top desks popular in the late 19th century.

A true cylinder desk features a single curved wooden cover that rotates backward on hidden tracks to reveal the writing surface and interior compartments. This differs from the later American roll-top desk, which uses many narrow slats (tambours) attached to a flexible backing, such as seen here, in your desk.

Other desk forms were the fall-front or slant-front desk, which had a hinged front panel that opens to create a horizontal writing surface. Pedestal or partner's desks had large flat surfaces that were often lined with leather and supported on frames that enclosed stacks of drawers.

Cylinder desks did not expand their footprint when opened as fall-front desks did, and did not require paper, inkwells or writing implements to be put away to close the desk. Additionally, the covered surface shielded the workspace from view and kept the contents of the workspace from dust and casual handling.

The use of a glazed (glass) bookshelf made it possible to store valuable books or precious objects, both for their protection and for conspicuous display.

The straight lines and use of colored inlay are characteristic of the Federal period, which was first seen in the US from about 1790 to 1825, when the aesthetic gave way to the heavier forms of the Classical style, with a greater use of veneer and cast gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts.

From your photos, I can tell this was not made at the end of the 18th/beginning of the 19th Century but when the style was revived beginning in 1876 and continuing into the 1940s.

I don't notice any hallmarks that allow me to attribute this to a specific maker (so if you see any marks, labels, etc please let me know) but similarly unattributed desks of comparable size and style that have come to auction recently have sold in the range of $400-700.

Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

In two sections, the upper with outset molded cornice over a quarter-fan and line-inlaid cabinet fitted with glazed doors opening to a shelved interior, the lower section with tambour cylinder lid opening to reveal a divided interior with pull-out writing surface, over a line-inlaid long drawers, all on tall tapering square-section legs.
Height: 70 inches; width: 26 inches; depth: 24 inches
CONDITION: This appears to be in good cosmetic condition with minor wear commensurate to age and use.
