I believe based on engravings that it is a Châtellerault sword
33 inches long
Hi Mark,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
While I'm not finding the engraved details on the hilt on other examples, it's a French Napoleonic naval sword from the early 19th Century (1800-1850). The engraving means that it belonged to an entrepreneur from Châtellerault named "A. Chassepot"; I haven't been able to find any information about him so presume he's not a historical figure. Since Châtellerault was the location of a sword-making company, it's possible/likely that this was made there as well.
French naval swords from this era are not rare but also not common and at any given time, there are 3-4 available for purchase. Ones associated with historical figures have a higher value than those without such associations and can often bring five- or even six-figures depending on the figure they are associated with. By comparison, ones without any such associations usually sell for between $1,000-1,500, more if they are in better condition than yours and also if they come with a scabbard (I assume this doesn't as I don't see a photo of one attached to this appraisal but if it does, please attach a photo and I'll upgrade the value).
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An antique French Napoleonic naval sword
possibly made in Châtellerault, France, first half 19th Century
The flaring pommel engraved with an armorial featuring a beehive, arrows and flags over a brass-wrapped shagreen (sharkskin) grip and shaped brass brip, the crossguard with another armorial of a laurel wreath and six flags, the ricasso to the double-edged blade engraved "A Chassepot entrepreneur / a Châtellerault" (A. Chassepot Entrepreneur from Châtellerault)"; lacking scabbard.
33 inches long
CONDITION: This sword appears to be in generally good condition with minor oxidation to the blade.
