Hi Greg,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Wedgwood porcelain is significant because it represents one of the most influential developments in the history of ceramics, industrial design, and global decorative arts. Josiah Wedgwood (1730–1795) is often called the “Father of English Pottery.” He was not only a master ceramicist but also a pioneering scientist and early industrialist, developing precise chemical experimentations with clays and glazes, the use of thermometers and pyrometers to control firing and the standardization of materials and production processes
His Etruria Works pottery was created in 1769 and would go on to create several different types, including Jasperware, Queen's Ware, Black Basalt, among others. This is the Florentine pattern and the red underglaze mark on the bottom dates it from the 1940s.
Such set of cups and saucers - with larger plates - is a dessert service and might have also included a cake plate with large foot.
Other examples of vintage Wedgwood dessert services of this size have been selling at auction for between $150 and $250 for the set.
