The appraised work appears to be an oak barrel stave with a hand painted whaling scene by American folk artist Elizabeth Dean (1911-2011). Dean was likely self-taught and worked primarily on the East Coast, first in Massachusetts and then New Hampshire. She appears to have routinely executed nautical and whaling scenes on barrel staves inspired by locales in Nantucket during the mid-20th century.
