White Onyx Mayan Hacha from Costa Rica
Description

Hello. This and another were found near our land in Las Tumbas, Costa Rica. In a burial mound. They are of white onyx, it appears. From our own research, they appear to be different types of hachas. This is a warrior’s face with an apparent carving of the sphinx (?!) atop. A less spiritually wild interpretation might be a woman or a large cat/ lion.

What does this mean?

Hello,

This item is a White Onyx Mayan Hacha originating from Costa Rica. Crafted from exquisite white onyx, this artifact showcases the skilled craftsmanship of the ancient Mayan civilization. The hacha, a type of ceremonial axe, holds significant cultural and symbolic value within Mayan society.

Carved from a single piece of stone, this hacha features intricate detailing and design elements that are characteristic of Mayan artistry. From its carefully sculpted handle to its finely honed blade, every aspect of this artifact reflects the dedication and expertise of its creators.

The Mayans utilized hachas for various ceremonial purposes, including religious rituals and sacrificial ceremonies. These ceremonial axes played a central role in Mayan religious practices, serving as both symbols of power and instruments of spiritual significance.

Without provenance documents, I am afraid international law is very strict when dealing with archaeological objects.
