White Seal MOET CHANDON BRUT CHAMPAGNE EPERNAY-FRANCE
06 January 2026
Description

Over the years since my dad brought it back after World War II, the foil and cork at the top of the bottle have deteriorated at some areas (refer to photos). The bottle was stored in my parents' basement until 2023. Since then it has been stored in my basement. I don't know when it leaked. My parent's had it wrapped in a terrycloth towel that has wine stains on it.

Hi Carroll,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.

Moët & Chandon is one of the most important and influential Champagne houses in the world, both historically and commercially. Founded in 1743 by Claude Moët in Épernay, it helped pioneer the idea of Champagne as a luxury product enjoyed beyond France, supplying European courts—including Napoleon Bonaparte, whose association helped cement the brand’s prestige. In 1832, the firm became Moët & Chandon when Pierre-Gabriel Chandon joined the business.

The house is renowned for its scale and consistency. It owns one of the largest vineyard holdings in Champagne (over 2,800 acres), allowing tight control over grape quality. Its flagship wine, Moët Impérial, is known for a balanced, approachable style, blending Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay.

Moët is also notable for innovation and branding. It played a major role in popularizing Champagne for celebrations worldwide and remains a cultural symbol of luxury and festivity.

Today, Moët & Chandon is part of LVMH, the world’s largest luxury group, reinforcing its global reach and enduring influence.

Moët & Chandon’s White Seal (White Star / Étoile Blanche) is different from their standard Champagnes because it is specifically designed to be served over ice—a style that was unusual and even controversial in traditional Champagne culture. It is slightly more sweet than Brut Champagnes, to compensate for dilution when the ice melts, keeping the wine balanced rather than washed out.

These bottles usually sell at auction for between $100 and $200 if in good condition so a bottle with a defect to the seal and/or cork/foil would be worth less - likely in the $50-75 range.
