This is a very heavy stone statue depicting a winged mermaid (or a being or deity who is half fish, and has wings) nursing an infant.
She is 9 inches long, 8 inches high, 2 3/4 inches wide, weight 3 pounds and 6.9 ounces.
I purchased her through eBay about 20 years ago, and sadly her history is lost to me.
Hello again, Anne!
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry and for your patience once again.
This piece is a possible, bronze motherly Indonesian demon chaser sculpture, from early 20th century. this beautiful creature comes from Indonesian cosmological world of Dewi Sri goddess. These Magical Mobiles are believed by the Balinese to repel the mischievous nature spirits and demons that disturb humans and play tricks upon them, placed in a high spot to scare off and prevent these spirits from entering the home.
This is a rare piece, in very good condition and hand-carved.
Oh, also, I am confused by the FMV being $1000 to $1400, but there being no insurance value?
Hello Anne! As I have not physically seen the object is very hard to distinguish whether this was made in bronze, or in a bronze-style stone. I would say that the finish might be in bronze-style as it is for sure hand-carved. Also, regarding the insurance value it should be calculated thus wise. Let me try again.
2400 $ is the insurance value :)
Hi David! Oh, it is definitely stone. Thank you for the insurance value, will it at some point be populated into the "Insurance Value" section of the appraisal, so that it will show when I download the appraisal? Thank you again, *so* much! Oh, here's a question, if you are able to answer it: if I did want to sell my statues (I have about 50 of them from all over the world), do these sorts of things fetch greater prices if sold as a collection, or individually - do you have any insight into that? Thank you so much! Anne
Hello, again, David, happy Monday! Thank you for this, I have so wondered about her! The one thing which confuses me is the term "Bronze" as she is stone (which I know you recognize, plus you say she is hand-carved :-) ). Can you please let me know what 'bronze' means in this context? Thank you! Anne
