Approximately 9' x 12' rectangular hand knotted rug, about 2" thick. Wolfgang made the rugs for Olga Fitch in Ecuador. I bought this in 1980, and it's been stored for almost 30 years. Hardly used. 100% wool. They even raised their own sheep for the wool. 62,500 knots per square meter, as I recall. I have all provenance, plus a picture of Wolfgang and his wife when I visited there. Chemical dyed. Primarily red in color with artistic designs of Ecuadorian life.
I bought this directly from the artist in Quito, Ecuador. It has never been exhibited.
Dear Brian,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. So, from the research that I was able to gather, Olga Fisch was a Hungarian born artist who relocated to Ecuador in 1939. She became an advocate for Ecuadorian folk art and even set up a company in 1941 to promote and preserve it. She would often invite an artist to design and collaborate with her on projects, such as rugs and this is what you have. The tag on the back "Artesmia de Alfomabra Quiros" translates to Artisanal Carpet Craft. Based on recent price valuations for rugs similar to yours a fair market estimate would be between 1000 and 5000 US dollars. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Best Regards,
Morgan
