Two wood carved animals, I think baby cow and donkey. I don't know who made them, but they're from Florence Italy. I'd say fair-good condition. The wood and/or paint is chipped in a couple of places (e.g. ears, tail).
They are approximately 2.5' long
Hi Mark,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
These are probably oversize creche figures and look like they are either heavily gessoed (a white base applied to wood underpaint) or chalkware (which are very light). These probably date to the 19th or early 20th Century and would have originally been accompanied by camels, sheep, lambs, wise men and the three Kings. The condition of these is quite good given the age and size (larger things often suffer greater wear than smaller ones).
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
Two Italian painted wood or chalkware creche set figures
Made in Florence, Italy, late 19th or early 20th Century
comprising a recumbent cow and recumbent donkey
Each approximately 30 inches long
CONDITION: Each with wear commensurate to age, including some chipping and paint loss throughout.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$350-450 each or $700-900 for the two together*
