Wooden Small Statue of a Chinese ? Warrior on Horseback
03 July 2018
Description

Again I've got a piece that I picked up from an estate sale. This statue (or statuette) appears to be hand-carved. It stands on its base approximately 7.25" tall and measures 5.5" side-to-side and 2.5" front-to-back. It weighs approximately 11.8 ounces. The wood of the statue has an almost orange hue. I'm really asking for this appraisal as much to learn about this thing I picked up as well as to know the value. At first I didn't think it was worth very much at all, but after researching online, I became unsure. I don't want to ask $10 for something that might be worth more, nor do I want to ask a big price for something that may only be worth $10. Unfortunately I don't know anything about the history of this carving. It seems to have been well cared for by whoever owned it as there are no scratches, dings, cracks, broken parts, or repairs.

Provenance

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the history of this piece. I did buy it at a high-end estate sale but paid under $20 for it since it was the last day. I love getting appraisals from Mearto because I always learn something new!

What does this mean?

Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a chinese wood carving of the second half of the 20th century. There are various possibilites of what it could represent. Either it could be Shou Lao, the god of longevity, riding the qilin ( but resembles a horse ?) who is often depicted with a gourd. The calabash or gourd has a number of positive meanings, like having many children, long life, fortune etc. More likely is that it represents Lu Dongbin 呂洞賓, one of the eight immortals who is often depicted with a fly-whisk and a sword which he uses ot ward off evil and get rid of ignorance. He is quite a character within the group of immortals and worshiped by Taoists. The estimate is based on similar offered or sold at auction.
