Year of the Horse
03 July 2026
Description

The painting was a gift from a wealthy Chinese business man about 25 years ago. The artist's name and markings are on the painting. He told me the artist was the same artist that painted the gift to President Clinton were he visited China years ago. The painting is in good condition but there is a glare in the background because I took the photos with my cell phone.

What does this mean?

Hello, this item is a contemporary Chinese ink and wash horse painting, titled by the client as “Year of the Horse,” showing a group of running horses in expressive black and grey brushwork on paper. The composition follows the popular Chinese equestrian painting tradition associated with vitality, success, movement, and strength, with calligraphy and red seal marks in the upper and lower areas. The work appears framed behind glass, and the photographs suggest generally good decorative condition, although glare prevents a full inspection of the paper surface. The inscription and seals are not clear enough to securely identify the artist, and the statement linking the artist to a gift presented to President Clinton cannot be verified from the images alone. Without documentary provenance, gallery records, or a clearly legible artist identification, it should be valued as a modern decorative Chinese brush painting rather than as a confirmed work by a listed or historically significant Chinese artist.

Comparable modern Chinese horse paintings and decorative ink works of this type usually sell in the lower to moderate decorative market unless the artist can be identified and supported by provenance. The large format, subject matter, calligraphy, and attractive presentation support some decorative value, but the unsigned or unverified authorship and lack of documentation limit the market level. Based on the photographs, size of approximately 50 x 24 inches, framing, condition, and current secondary-market demand, the fair market value is $150 - $400 USD.
