I own a 40+ year old cello made in Mittenwald, Germany. I would like to have it appraised and prepared to sell. It is in good condition but needs some repairs. Included with the cellos are the cello stand, case and 2 bows.
Full size cello
It was purchased by my aunt from a private owner in between 1974 and 1975.
Hi Felicia,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry. Given the extent of the repairs needed, it's difficult to find a cello in a similar condition that has sold at auction - the Karl Meisel cellos that have been auctioned appear to be in considerably better condition but only sell in the few hundred dollar range...whereas one can buy a refurbished Karl Meisel cello for between $500-$1500 (according to online prices advertised by string instrument retailers).
We typically advise clients to sell "as is," for two reasons:
- repairs can send up red flags to potential buyers
- it may not be financially sensible to spend money on repairs that you might not recoup when you sell the item (better to let the new owner repair the piece if they want to).
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
A vintage Karl Meisel Stradevarius-type full-size cello
made in Mittenwald, West Germany, third quarter 20th Century
labeled to the interior, serial number #12546, accompanied by a stand, case and two bows.

CONDITION: client attests this is in need of some repairs (needs a new nut, the soundpost needs to be repositioned, a new bridge, and a new endpin collar. I have the metal screw that hold the endpin in place but the collar is missing. Minor scratches and minor nicks around the seam.)
PROVENANCE: acquired from a private seller circa 1974-1975, then by inheritance
$100-150 *
