This item is a wooden barrel top portrait of Rembrandt. It has carved and gilded lettering around the outer edge, and the portrait appears to be burned or ink etched into the wood. It has the artists signature on the bottom right of the portrait that appears to read " A. Van Der Leeden '99" although it is unclear what century.
This item was acquired at an estate sale and given to me by a family member, but no significant information is available about the purchase.
A late 19th century wall decoration, prefabricated wooden panel with a print after a wood engraving after the painting by Rembrandt van Rijn, 'Tronie' of a Man with a Feathered Beret, c. 1635 - 1640. Such wall decorations were sold prefabricated with the print and the letters to be then carved out or treated with a soldering iron by an amateur artist. There is no artist listed with that name, hence it is very likely that it is the name of the amateur artist who did the carving. The estimate is based on similar items offered or sold at auction.
