Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a Foo lion or Foo dog statue, the female lion feeding the cub through its paw, showing great facial expression, covered with an effect varnish. The quality of the carving resembles Qing dynasty pieces. During the second half of the 20th century more and more reproductions were made. You can check the varnish with a UV-light or black light. If parts appear in a dark violet colour it would be a reproduction. The estimate is for a genuine antique, based on recent auction results for similars. "Asking prices" in the trade can be higher and vary.
This Wooden lion is genuine antique piece of art. I am 79 years old sculptor and I can distinguish real from fake art.
On underside of the item is only one small nail or screw hole, few thin cracks on wood and nothing else.
