Hello, this item is a signed oil on canvas portrait dated to the late 18th or early 19th century, attributed to M. Elligers and depicting a female member of the Elligers family, possibly Margrethe Elligers. The sitter is shown in courtly attire, adorned with jeweled accessories and an embroidered gown, reflecting the decorative portraiture style prevalent in Northern Europe during the transition from Rococo to early Biedermeier aesthetics. The format, attire, and symmetrical pose are consistent with provincial Scandinavian or Northern German family portraiture. The painting measures 24 x 30 inches and is documented with a verso label in old Norwegian, providing family lineage back to Iver Jørgen Elligers of Tønsberg (1753–1818).
Condition appears recently restored or in conservation, with visible photographic touch-ups likely used for clarity during restoration. The presence of a clear label, verifiable genealogy, and legible artist signature provide solid provenance, increasing the painting’s interest for collectors of Scandinavian historical portraiture. If the authorship of M. Elligers is confirmed and placed within the documented Elligers lineage, this portrait may hold both genealogical and regional historical value. Current fair market value at auction would range from $1,200 to $2,000,
