Thank you for contacting Mearto. This is a sculpture of Guanyin that looks to be carved from alabaster or nephrite. There is surface detailing on the figure’s robes. She is perched on a ledge, holds a lotus stem and is surrounded by clouds. It is likely of Chinese origin. The lotus stem is traditionally indicative of the benefits that result from acts of kindness. The figure emerges from the rough stone that forms the back of the piece.
It is difficult to precisely date sculptures like this, since the subject matter is repeated over centuries. but it may be from the 18th or 19th centuries. The craving is detailed and the proportions and composition are finely done.
