Chinese bronze enamel vase

Description

Chinese bronze enamel vase believed to have been booty looted from the Summer Palace in Peking in 1860. The vase was part of the estate of Sir George E Knox, a British Raj official who was a judge in Allahabad, United Provinces, India, who had purchased Braemar estate from a certain Colonel G E Eryskine (name unclear) in 1889 in the hill station town of Nainital, India. My grandmother bought Braemar estate from the the son of Sir George E Knox, Kenneth Neville Knox, C.J. E, in 1929. Grandmother passed away in 1939 and her older sister raised up my father and his siblings at Braemar. In 1972 or 1975, when we had gone to visit our surrogate grandmother during the holidays, my grandmother gifted the vase to my mother and the vase was employed in the purpose for which it was created for the next five decades or so until both my parents passed. The vase has been in my possession since 2022. The vase itself is made of bronze that has been enamelled, the colour being blue decorated with flowers of varied colours and hues. As can be imagined, the vase is a little worse for wear, although there are a couple of chippings on the enamel. The reign mark and other details at the bottom of the vase has been provided in the accompanying photographs.

Dimensions

The vase has a diameter of 20 centimetres, height of six centimetres and a depth of five and a half centimetres approximately.
