The pitcher is 6.75 inches tall. The opening on top is 3.75 x 3 inches and the base is 3.25 inches in diameter. A cocker spaniel is hanging is paws over the side of a basket. There is crazing on the bottom and a small crack and some chipping around the top rim.
It belonged to my mother for many years. Wondering if it is a Wedgwood Majolic piece?
Hi Sarah,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
For an example of what this was probably supposed to be, see this link (https://www.chairish.com/product/2103068/english-majolica-pewter-cavalier-spaniel-in-basket-syrup-pitcher-1881) but it lacks the vibrant glaze as well as pewter mounts so I'm calling it just a pitcher rather than a syrup pitcher. Yours is much lower in value being more plain (and the price on Chairish is a retail price, Mearto's are fair-market for auction purposes).
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:
An Enoch Wedgwood English earthenware pitcher
In the form of a Cavalier Spaniel in a basket, circa 1877
With brown drip-glaze at the top, raised English registry mark underneath.
6 3/4 inches tall
CONDITION: with minor chips, pitting and some losses throughout. May be lacking lid fittings.
PROVENANCE: inherited
$100-150*
*represents a fair-market value for auction purposes; retail or asking price may vary.
Please let us know if you have additional items to appraise, and thank you again for using Mearto.
