Chinese Bedroom Set
03 November 2022
Description

I believe that this set was not likely made in China but represents Chinese influence. Probably made in America. I believe this is made of mahogany with the drawers and door fronts finished in flame mahogany. All the hardware is original and as new, It has been expertly made and is very elegant. The areas around the font top side were possibly hand carved. This design is present on both the chests and also on the pedestals. Each piece is very heavy and extremely well made. All drawers are dove tailed. I understand that at the time it was purchased it was exceptionally expensive and it is now in showroom condition. The headboard is 54"W and 46"H. The tail piece (not attached currently) is he same width and about 30" high (This piece is in storage). The mirror is beautifully carved: 52:W and 46"H. The High chest is 59"H, 37"W and 20"D. The Low chest is 35"H, 63" W and 25" D. Pedestals are 28.5"H, 17" W and 17" D, and have once drawer and a shelf. There is also one chair that matches the carving on the top of the chests and on the pedestals (No picture, also in storage).

Provenance

Purchased when new by my wife's grandfather for her grandmother in New York in the 1930's. It has been in the family ever since. It was beautifully refinished about 30 years and has been used sitting in an extra bedroom that is virtually never used. It is now in San Diego.

Thank you Delia.
How do I upload additional pics of the low chest?
I have not been able to easily find any id of the manufacturer. Where do you suggest I look.
Thank you,

Makers labels are usually on the insides of drawer sides, on the back or underneath the piece. Furniture of this vintage usually has a paper label but sometimes there is a tag - often metal - on the insides of drawers or on the back.

Hello Delia, I have uploaded additional pics.
Each dresser has sort of hidden drawers above the doors. Each has the carving on it as described earlier. Each drawer for both cabinets on the inside is beautifully finished and very very clean.
Also there is a protective glass cover on each dresser and both pedestals

Thanks, Brian, you're all set.

PS If there's just one chair and it's a side chair, the value would most likely be quite nominal, possibly about $100-150. Wouldn't tremendously change the overall value of the set.
