Artist John Westall painted 1873-1893. Oil on canvass. approx 9" x 16"
Purchased at auction in Los Angeles in mid-1990's
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal, this appears to be a pair of paintings by John Westall (active from 1873-1893) who is known for decorative paintings depicting rural landscapes and picturesque sunsets. Very little is known about the artist, but his paintings appear once in a while at fine art auctions. The estimate is based on current auction results. Prices in the trade might be considerably higher for such an attractive pair of paintings.
Thank you for the follow up question. The artist is not listed in the dictionary of british artists 1880-1940, only the information that he flourished from 1873-1893 has been copied from one auction catalogue to the next, where the primary source of information was found is not clear. A very similar pair of paintings sold on 14th September 2017 at Duke´s auction for 380,- GBP in Dorchester, Great Britain. I would trust that the colleagues there tried their best to promote the sale and get a good auction result. In a few cases an artist might fetch higher prices outside his home country, e.g. if the painting itself is good and appeals to a buyer.
Thanks for your detailed information. One part of my question you didn’t clarify- is your range of values for each painting or both as a pair?
The estimate is for the pair unfortunately.
Could you confirm - is your estimate of $500 - $700 a per painting price or for the pair, as these most often sell as individual paintings?
Additionally, I understand that Westall is pretty well known in as a painter particularly in the UK where he was born.
