I believe this is a Pre-Columbian Axe God from the Guanacaste region of present-day Costa Rica. It is very Dark Green almost Black in color. Lots of pitting and a small portion is missing. It feels very cool to the touch, and has a smooth finish that has an almost oily or greasy feel. I took it to a metallurgist company several years ago for testing. They tested it and found to have the specific gravity of Jade. I can send the report.
approximately 2 inches wide and 5 inches in height
Hello, this item is a carved jade figure resembling a Pre-Columbian Axe God, attributed to the Guanacaste-Nicoya region of present-day Costa Rica or Nicaragua. Measuring approximately 5 inches high and 2 inches wide, the object displays the abstract anthropomorphic form typical of axe gods—figures with minimalist limbs, stylized heads, and an axe-blade-shaped lower body. These were ritual or ceremonial objects carved primarily from jadeite, used by elites and shamans in the Greater Nicoya cultural zone between 500–1000 CE. The reported specific gravity test suggesting jade strengthens the likelihood of authenticity in terms of material, though not necessarily date.
Authenticating such pieces hinges not only on material but on carving technique, wear patterns, and provenance. While the form and surface treatment align with genuine examples, the lack of excavation record or institutional provenance introduces caution. If fully authenticated by a Pre-Columbian specialist and backed by a reputable lab analysis, this piece could be valued between $2,000 and $5,000 USD.
