The young girl is portrayed sitting, wearing a light blue silk dress and holding a white dove, which would increase the likelihood that this is a posthumous portrait. The painting is signed on the back "by Thomas Sully" and signed by the artist C.Reeves. Little is known about this artist, but he or she apparently received professional artistic training from a british artist. During the past few years child portraits of the same period and comparable quality have been selling for lower prices than those paid in the 1990s. The painting in your possession is very attractive nonetheless, offered at the right auction it might sell in the price range listed.
