My mother acquired this in Washington DC in the late 1960's. I've inherited it now. This was previously professionally appraised for ins. purposes Oct. 1995, and I've attached a copy of that appraiser's description to help appraise it for today's current fair market value.
Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a copy by C.Reeves after a 1830s child portrait by Thomas Sully. The young girl is portrayed sitting, wearing a light blue silk dress and holding a white dove, which would increase the likelihood that this is a posthumous portrait. The painting is signed on the back "by Thomas Sully" and signed by the artist C.Reeves. Little is known about this artist, but he or she apparently received professional artistic training from a british artist. During the past few years child portraits of the same period and comparable quality have been selling for lower prices than those paid in the 1990s. The painting in your possession is very attractive nonetheless, offered at the right auction it might sell in the price range listed.
Hi, Graham, I´m on the other side of the atlantic and dealt with only a few auction houses of your area directly. My feeling is that a larger auction house in the East, e.g. in Boston would be suitable.
Klaus, I'm interested in consigning this painting now at auction. Can you recommend a reputable auction house within a 500 mile drive of Columbus Ohio 43221? Thank you, -Graham
