2 ballerinas stretching at the ballet barre dressed in blue tutus. The background is vibrant orange. It appears to be a sign of a signature on the bottom left that has been rubbed out.
This painting was hidden behind a paper copy print. On the back of the painting it states “To David, Degas Ballerinas Phillips Gallery 1944”.
Dear Eugene,
Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
The original painting by Edgar Degas called "Dancers at the barre" executed in the early 1880s-c.1900 is part of the Phillips Collection and can be seen here:
https://www.phillipscollection.org/event/2011-09-30-degass-dancers-barre.
To me, your painting seems to be a copy (a reversed version) of the original and has no value on the art market.
However, I think it would be worth checking if Edgar Degas did any similar versions during his lifetime, which would request checking the catalogue raisonne of his work, and this is something we can help you with. For further information about our authentication service, please check: https://mearto.com/authenticate
Alternatively, you could also contact one of the curators at the Phillips Collection, who could check if any similar versions are mentioned in their files.
I hope this is of help to you.
Best regards,
Karine
