The painting is the work of an artist named Etienne Roger. It came from an estate sale. I am not certain of the type of paint, but it is blue, and the condition of the canvas and the painting is good.
The painting measures 35 x 28 inches.
Dear Rhonda Guess,
Thank you for your appraisal submission. The work is an oil painting on canvas by Roger Etienne (American, 1923 - 2011) from 1973. The composition depicts a portrait in blue of a clown or joker-like figure. It is signed and dated "Etienne 1973" to the lower left. From the photographs provided, the work appears to be in Good condition with some discoloration and minor staining to the varnish. It measures 35 x 28 inches in frame.
Roger Etienne was born in Belgium, grew up in France, and later moved to California to pursue acting. He was drawn to the arts as a young child, selling his drawings on trains. His oeuvre included landscapes of his hometown, Parisian scenes, and figural drawings, exhibiting a loose brushwork influenced by impressionists. Etienne became a famous and well-credited actor in Hollywood while continuing to paint and draw in his free time. His works can be found in many private, international collections. Due to his quick output of paintings, Etienne has an extensive secondary market sales record, yet the constant frequency of his works for sale appears to decrease their sales value for lack of rarity. Nearly all of his sales in the past year have passed at auctions, remaining unsold. The few works that have sold, were sold under their estimates. Considering these trends, we estimate the Fair Market Value of this work between $0 and $200.
Thank you for your appraisal submission. If you have any questions, please leave a comment below.

Hi Rhonda,
We do not use 1stdibs as a site for comps and estimates because it is an e-commerce platform. The values on 1stdibs most often resemble retail and commercial prices rather than secondary market values. While items may successfully sell for their listed prices, their values don't appropriately reflect fair market value. You can find some other comparables here:

Yes, I understand that 1st Dibs is not fair market value, but I just needed more info than zero to $200. Thank you for the links. They are helpful.
Hello Charlotte:
Thank you for your appraisal. I think this could compare to the comps here--please consider...If I put it on the site at $100 or $200, it does not compare...
