What does this mean?

The appraised work appears to be an oil on panel painting possibly executed by British artist Henry Thomas Alken (1785-1851). The painting depicts a hunting scene with a pack of hounds in the foreground and several figures on horseback. Alken was both a painter and engraver and is well-known for his hunting and sporting subjects, which he typically painted and then engraved himself. The estimate provided is based on comparables recently offered and sold at auction. The appraised work's size, composition, medium and condition (based on images provided), as well as the artist's current auction market were taken into consideration when determining the estimate. In many cases, pricing for similar examples available on the primary (retail) market vary, and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples. This is the first time I have ever done anything like this, so will read up on FAQ’s. Is the commission payable the responsibility of the buyer or seller and will auctions be aimed at UK market or wider afield?

Grace harlow Jul 26, 02:07 UTC

Mearto works with auction houses around the world. Since the artist is British and his work primarily sells in the UK, I would imagine those houses would have the most interest. The buyer's premium, or commission on a sale is the responsibility of the buyer.
